Post Operative wound care advice and instructions following shave excision

Leave dressing in place for 7-10 days if possible. When dressing falls off or is removed clean the wound with diluted antiseptic such as Dettol or Savlon. Apply the prescribed antibiotic ointment to the wound. Do not let area dry out or a scab to form. Apply a dressing over wound or if leaving uncovered apply antibiotic ointment 4-6 times per day. Typical appearance of wound at immediately post-surgery (2), at 1 week post-surgery (3) and at 4 weeks post-surgery. If painful take paracetamol, neurofen or solphadeine as directed

Deeper shave excisions and lesions removed from the trunk and limbs heal more slowly and may take 3-4 weeks to heal completely

Infected wound- wound is increasingly painful, sore, swollen and redness extends beyond wound margins

Excessive or increasing redness, swelling, pain or discharge from the wound are possible signs of infection and if you notice these contact the office (012880053), the hospital or your GP
